Marty "Retro Rogue" Goldberg of ClassicGaming.com has put together a Complete History of Breakout. Breakout was one of Atari's early and most successful arcade games, spawning many derivatives and home versions throughout the years. Diving deep into the creation of Breakout with access to Atari luminaries, Retro Rogue reveals that the game's creation had a little known twist: If the story ended there, Breakout would have been released in 1975. However, when it came time to move the game further in to production there were problems. As Al explained it, "Ironically, the design was so minimized that normal mere mortals couldn't figure it out. To go to production, we had to have technicians testing the things so they could make sense of it. If any one part failed, the whole thing would come to its knees. And since Jobs didn't really understand it and didn't want us to know that he hadn't done it, we ended up having to redesign it before it could be shipped." AtariAge user Cropsy has created an online Atari 2600 Label Maker application that allows you to generate authentic-looking Picture Style labels with a few simple clicks. After choosing the label image, game title, font color, copyright text, controller type, and other options, a pair of labels is generated (one for the main surface of the cart and a smaller end label) which you can then save and share. AtariAge users have already created a large assortment of labels, which you can view in our Atari 2600 Forum. To start creating your own labels, head on over to the Atari 2600 Label Maker today! Having been shown several years ago at classic gaming events, the Atari 7800 prototype Missing in Action has finally seen the light of day! AtariAge user Mitch recently acquired the only known prototype of this game to exist and has graciously shared the binary with the community so everyone may enjoy it. Missing in Action is based on the 1984 movie of the same name, featuring Chuck Norris as the protagonist. The game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up, taking place in Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War. As Colonel James Braddock, a captured POW, your mission is to escape from an internment camp, rescue captured POWs, free the American embassy, and kill the evil drug czar. Had it been completed, Missing in Action would have been an impressive addition to the 7800 library. As it stands, this prototype is about 85% complete and is quite playable. Mitch has made cartridges of Missing in Action available, complete with label and manual. For more information on how to obtain a cartridge, please visit our Atari 7800 Forum. Several Northwest Atari 2600 enthusiasts recently put together a playable Mega Man 2600 demo that was commissioned for the I Am 8-Bit art gallery being held in Los Angeles through May 12th. The project was spearheaded by David Galloway, with contributions by Bob Montgomery, Tommy Montgommery, and Fred Quimby. A mix of batari Basic and 6502 Assembly was used to complete the project in a very tight deadline. While not a complete game, Mega Man 2600 is still quite playable and has been enjoyed by many visiting the I Am 8-Bit gallery. You can watch two game play video clips of Mega Man 2600 in action over at GameTrailers.com and discuss the project in our Atari 2600 Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
