Fans of classic arcade games are all too familiar with the roar, "Beware I Live!" A long, lost prototype of the beloved (and difficult) arcade game Sinistar has been uncovered for Atari 8-bit computers. Thanks to the hard work of Atari Archivist Ken Van Mersbergen, this unreleased arcade to home conversion has finally been found. Sinistar combines fast action, mind numbing speed, and evil sounding voice synthesis into one explosive package. Your goal is to destroy Sinistar, a giant metal creature bent on destroying the universe and whatever else that gets in its way. However, to destroy Sinistar you must make Sinibombs out of Sinisite crystals harvested from floating plantetiods. The Atari 8-bit version is a wonderful port, capturing all the action and excitement of the arcade game. The graphics are amazingly accurate, the controls are sharp and precise, and the digitized voice rings out loud and clear. Sinistar was just about finished, but there are a few minor issues and bugs that needed to be addressed before the game saw a commercial release. The biggest issue is the computer AI, which isn't quite polished. Sinistar will be displayed in public at this weekend's Dallas vgXpo show, and plans are to release the Sinistar binary in the near future so everyone can enjoy it. You can read a thorough review of Sinistar over at AtariProtos.com, and discuss this exciting find in our Prototypes Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Adventure II is a new Atari 5200 game that picks up where the classic Atari 2600 game Adventure leaves off. Adventure II features larger mazes, snazzier graphics, and more to do than in the original game, promising to be one of the best Atari 5200 homebrew releases to date! As the game nears completion, AtariAge and Square Trio have teamed up to sponsor a two-prong contest to allow the classic gaming community to contribute to the game. The first part of the contest is to create alternate player icon graphics. The second part of the contest is to dream up player rankings that are displayed to the player upon completion of the game (in a manner similar to Star Raiders). The contest runs through the end of August, with a grand prize being awarded as well as two runner-up prizes. You can learn more about the contest and how to enter here. Good luck! If you follow the news we post on AtariAge or frequent our forums, then you should be aware of the Flashback 2 console that is now hitting retail stores. The Flashback 2 is a new, dedicated 2600 console developed by Atari, featuring 40 built-in games and two joysticks modeled after the original CX-40 joystick controllers. What you may not know is that the Flashback 2 can be modified to add a 2600 cartridge port, allowing you to use standard 2600 cartridges with this new game console. Curt Vendel of AtariMuseum.com, who was involved in the creation of the Flashback 2, has put together a thorough tutorial on how to do just that. You can view Curt's Flashback 2 Hacking Page for more details, and also discuss this hack in our Dedicated Systems forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Atari enthusiast Fred Quimby (batari in our forums) has released an Alpha version of a new Atari 2600 BASIC Compiler he is developing. This compiler can be used by budding Atari 2600 programmers to get their feet wet on the 2600, and provides a stepping stone to serious 2600/6502 programming. The compiler generates assembly-language code that can be compiled by the DASM Assembler and then run in the popular Stella 2600 emulator. You can learn more about and download Fred's Atari 2600 BASIC Compiler here, where you can also give him feedback on improvements you'd like to see made. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
