While there's been some talk about the Flashback 2.0 in our forums, Atari has now formally announced the successor to their popular Flashback dedicated game console. The new Flashback 2.0 is styled after an original Atari 2600 console, features 40 built-in games, is packaged with two Atari 2600 CX-40 style joysticks, and will carry a retail price of less than $30. While most of the games included are classic hits from the original Atari 2600, some original games as well as homebrews also make an appearance. The new Flashback unit is based on genuine 2600 hardware, meaning the games running on it are actual 2600 binaries as opposed to simulations of existing 2600 games, as was the case with the original Flashback. To learn more about the Flashback 2.0, you can read the official Atari press release here, and discuss this new console in our online forums. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

Go Fish! is an original game loosely based on the Intellivision game Shark! Shark! - you are a wee fish and, to survive, you must eat other, smaller fish to grow. But watch out for the shark, as he's also on the hunt for food and you could be his next meal! AtariAge and programmer Bob Montgomery have teamed up to sponsor a contest to create original artwork for Go Fish! This label artwork will appear on all copies of Go Fish!, which will make its debut at the upcoming Oklahoma Video Game Expo, after which it will be available in the AtariAge Store. To learn how to enter the contest, please visit the Go Fish! Label Contest page. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Chris Walton (cd-w in our forums), has announced development of a new Atari 2600 homebrew game titled Hunchy. Hunchy is loosely based on the classic arcade game Hunch Back (1982), which in-turn is loosely based on the novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1831) by Victor Hugo. You play the role of the hunchbacked bell-ringer Quasimodo in his quest to rescue the gypsy girl Esmeralda from the cathedral of Notre Dame. To succeed in the rescue, you must jump across the roof of the Notre Dame, avoiding the guards and an assortment of missiles. The rescue attempt starts off easily, but gets rapidly more difficult. You can follow the game's development in our Homebrew Discussion Forum, as well as download the latest version that you can try in your favorite Atari 2600 emulator. The PhillyClassic organizers have previously revealed their plans for a show this year, but new information has now come to light. They are organizing not one, but TWO shows this year, one to take place in Philadelphia (as expected) on November 12 and 13, and an earlier show in Dallas, Texas, to be held on August 20 and 21. The PhillyClassic crew have teamed up with NBC to create two events sharing a common name, America's VideoGame Expo, where they expect to attract over 50,000 attendees between the two shows. The newly renamed show, like previous PhillyClassics, caters to both classic and modern gamers, features free admission, and both shows will see a substantial increase in floor space from earlier PhillyClassic events. AtariAge will be present at both shows, and we look forward to seeing many of you there as well! More information about the shows will be posted soon, but you can get a head start by heading over to the America's VideoGame Expo website. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
It was a long time coming, but we've finally migrated the AtariAge Forums to new and much improved software! The forums have a wealth of new features (some of which are detailed here), and they should be notably faster than before. We also moved AtariAge to a new, shiny server that should eliminate any slowdown that may have been noticeable before. These changes pave the way for additional new features to be added to the forums and the site in general down the road! You can visit the new forums here, and If you notice anything not working the way it should (either in the forums or the site in general), please contact us. Enjoy! Ken Siders, fresh from his development of Atari 5200, 8-bit, and 7800 versions of Beef Drop (a Burgertime port), has embarked on his next project: A port of the popular arcade game Q*bert. Originally revealed two days ago as an April Fool's joke, Ken has already made significant progress on the game. Gameplay-wise, Ken's rendition of Q*bert plays pretty much as you would expect Q*bert to. The most noticeable missing elements are all the enemies beyond the red balls, although this version is still somewhat challenging due to the speed and frequency with which those balls do bounce down towards you. The game already features a title screen as well as the "Level" screen that appears before each wave of levels. Q*bert for the 7800 shows great potential and is following in the footsteps of some other wonderful 7800 arcade ports, such as Food Fight. You can view the original April Fool's thread here and follow current development of Q*bert for the 7800 in our Atari 7800 Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
