Man Goes Down – no it's not rude, just an accurate description of the gameplay for a new Atari 2600 homebrew game being developed by Alex Herbert. You see, you control this little guy, negotiating platforms that continuously scroll up the screen. Get pushed off the top or fall off the bottom and it’s game over. There's fruit and other goodies to collect along the way to help you on your journey down. Man Goes Down will fully support Richard Hutchinson's AtariVox speech module. Not only does this add cool synthesised speech to the game, it also stores the preferred TV mode (NTSC/PAL/PAL60) plus the top 5 scores with the players' initials! You can visit our In Development section to view a wide variety of screenshots from the game, and can follow its progress (and download the binary to try yourself) in our Homebrew Development Forum. Coinciding with the 20th Anniversary of when the Atari 7800 was originally slated to ship, Static Gamer has announced an Atari 7800 Homebrewerpalooza Contest. While homebrew development for the 2600 and 5200 has been fairly active, to date there has been little homebrew activity on the 7800, and this contest aims to help change that. Entries for the contest can include original Atari 7800 homebrew games as well as hacks of existing games, and the contest runs through June 27th, 2005 (Atari's anniversary). You can learn more about the contest here and discuss the contest with fellow Atari 7800 enthusiasts in our Contests Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Game Console Hacking is a new book that explores hacking a wide variety of game consoles, from the Atari 2600 all the way through the Xbox. Two of the book's principle authors are Joe Grand (of Pixels Past) and Albert Yarusso (of AtariAge), who contributed a significant amount of classic gaming material to the book. In addition to learning how to perform a myriad of hardware hacks on classic and modern consoles, the book also covers homebrew efforts for these systems and you'll find a primer on electrical engineering basics to help get you started. An added bonus is the great foreword written by Ralph Baer, "The Father of Video Games". You can view the front cover here and the back cover of the book here. Game Console Hacking can be purchased from Amazon.com and other online and offline retailers. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
