Thanks to Mindfield for informing us that version 1.60 of the Windows Atari ST emulator SainT has been released, just in time for Christmas. There are lots of great changes in this version, including the ability to record movies complete with audio. There are also fixes to improve compatibility with demos, and SainT is now the first emulator to run the 3D full-screen interrupt demo by Ziggy Stardust. Chris Hutt has posted a recent update to his Atari XL/XE Space Harrier Conversion Project page. This ambitious project aims to port the popular Sega arcade game Space Harrier to the Atari XL/XE computers. Chris' recent work involves moving the game to work in a cartridge, as opposed to the original goal of making it available in disk format. Due to this change, Chris has had the opportunity to improve several aspects of the game, including more colors, faster draw routines, larger backgrounds, and more speech samples. Kroko has developed a prototype flash cartridge for the Atari 2600 capable of running up to 512KB ROMs. The picture to the right (larger version with more detail here) shows Andrew Davie's 512KB Fu Kung demo running on actual hardware using the prototype cartridge. Andrew is seeking suggestions for the content of the first VCSVideo cartridge - a new technology combining full-screen full motion video playback with digitised sound. He would like some historic footage and sound, approximately 10 seconds long, to release in a limited-edition proof of concept cartridge. AtariArchives.org has announced that a trilogy of classic computer books is now available online: BASIC Computer Games (published in 1978), More BASIC Computer Games (1978), and Big Computer Games (1984). Edited by David Ahl of Creative Computing Magazine, the books feature type-in BASIC games, including such classics as Animal, Blackbox, Eliza, Hammurabi, Lunar LEM Rocket, Mugwump, and Hunt the Wumpus. The two earlier books feature illustrations by George Beker, which will be instantly recognizable by anyone who read these books or Creative Computing magazine 20 or more years ago. The books are available with the permission of David Ahl. With this announcement, AtariArchives.org has reached the milestone of making 25 classic computer books available on the Web. The book, covering Atari 8-bit computers, explains how to design, use, and animate player/missile graphics, including collision detection and other essential functions. Supporting up to four simultaneous players, Castle Crisis is a fast-paced game where the goal is to see if you can outlast your enemies by destroying their castles while defending your own. Gameplay mechanics and graphics closely match the arcade, with additional gameplay options available, adding variety to an already great game. Dates and a location have been announced by the organizers of the 2004 Midwest Gaming Classic. The Midwest Gaming Classic is the Midwest's only all-encompassing electronic gaming event, featuring a large variety of displays, vendors and special attractions for arcade uprights, computers, pinball and home video games from past to present. The folks at AtariArchives.org have announced that the full text of the classic computer book Digital Deli is now available on the Web. Published in 1984 and subtitled "The Comprehensive, User-Lovable Menu of Computer Lore, Culture, Lifestyles and Fancy," Digital Deli offers a unique perspective on computers and their users in the golden age of microcomputing. The book was written by more than 100 contributors and edited by Steve Ditlea. Contributors include computing pioneers Ralph Baer, Steve Wozniak, Nolan Bushnell, Robert Moog, Bill Gates, and Mitch Kapor, in addition to well-known writers and pundits, such as Stan Veit, Steven Levy, Howard Rheingold, and Esther Dyson. Scott Anderson has announced a new contest based on Atari's classic Adventure for the 2600. The Room 34 Adventure Challenge is a multi-part trivia/brain teaser contest, and Scott is giving away store credit in the AtariAge Store for the first, second, and third-place winners. The game will require you to play a web-based version of Adventure that Scott has created, solve nefarious puzzles, and rack your brain trying to answer video game related trivia questions. Shanon Fernald sends us word that he is developing a brand-new Atari 2600-compatible console. Called the RetroConsole, the project endeavors to recreate several classic consoles by programming all the hardware logic in a single FPGA chip. The small, battery-powered system will allow all 2600 game cartridges to be played and will support s-video, VGA and stereo output. Target price is less than $50. Lars Hannig of Starcat Developments has announced that he is working on a horror graphic adventure for the Jaguar titled Eerievale, which he unveiled at this past weekend's Euro JagFest in Germany. The new game engine is nearly complete and is designed so additional graphic adventure games can be created with ease.
