Fabrizio Zavagli has released the first public version of his new GP32 Atari 2600 emulator, called VCS32. Fabrizio's emulator is a port of Dan Boris' Virtual VCS with a few updates to further improve the emulation. The GP32 is a 133mhz machine with enough horsepower to allow emulators to run well on it, with a nice 320x240 resolution screen that allows the whole game area to be displayed. Additionally, you can easily download homebrew games and applications through USB to the console's memory (a standard SmartMedia card). Mark DiLuciano and Nir Dary have announced they have completed work on their new Mega-Cart for Atari 8-bit computers, and that the first game to take advantage of this cartridge will be the classic game M.U.L.E. The Mega-Cart allows "disk-only" games of up to 512K in size to be transplanted into cartridge form, opening up an entirely new world for Atari 8-bit cartridge games. M.U.L.E. will be sold as a limited, numbered run of 50 cartridges, with pre-ordering to begin at 10am PST Monday, April 28th (giving everyone a chance to get Cartridge #1). Atari 2600 programmer Andrew Davie has announced a new version of the macro assembler DASM, the standard assembler for all 2600 development. The DASM assembler supports a wide range of targets, including the 6502, 68HC11, 68705, 7803, HD6303, and 6507. Version 2.20.04 adds a significant number of improvements over previous versions, all detailed at the new DASM homepage. Matthias Domin has announced development of an Ethernet/FLASH cartridge for the Atari Jaguar. This cartridge contains a 10Mbit ethernet port, 8 MBytes of FLASH-RAM, and two sockets for serial EEPROMs. The cartridge currently includes the following integrated software: Matthias is currently seeking feedback for this project! John K. Harvey has passed word onto us that he's finished upgrading the Atari 2600 programming tool Distella to version 3.0. Distella allows you to disassemble any 2K/4K Atari 2600 ROM image or any non-bankswitched 7800 ROM image into source code that can be compiled with the DASM assembler. Version 3.0 of Distella contains some 2600-related bugfixes and adds support for 7800 games that don't use bankswitching. This is a great tool if you want to learn how 2600 games (and now 7800!) work. The Windows version of MESS (Multi Emulator Super System) has been updated to version 0.67. The MESS emulator supports a wide variety of game systems and computers, including the Atari 5200, 7800 and 8-bit computers. This latest version is based on MAME 0.67 and incorporates changes to various system drivers as well improvements specific to the Windows version of MESS. Glenn Bussell, fresh off the heels of his Atari 2600 Hangman Editor has trained his sights on another 2600 game, this time Miniature Golf. Glenn has created an editor that will allow you to generate your own Miniature Golf levels, even building a new binary you can run in your favorite 2600 emulator. Glenn is holding a contest where he'll take his favorite nine user-created levels and which he'll then use to create a new version of Miniature Golf. The folks at the Classic Computer Magazine Archive are delighted to announce that the full text of Creative Computing Video & Arcade Games Magazine is now on the Web here. A short-lived spin-off from Creative Computing magazine, Creative Computing Video & Arcade Games magazine only published two issues, in 1983. But they were both packed with great information about home video games, computer games, handheld games, and arcade games. The magazines include reviews, guides to mastering games, and informative features. Carlos Lopez has posted an update to his Atari 2600 on-a-Chip project page. The goal of the Atari 2600 on-a-Chip project is to implement the entire VCS on a single chip that can then be easily produced. Fabrizio Zavagli, author of Space Treat Deluxe for the Atari 2600, is bringing his Atari 2600 experience to bear on the GP32 gaming handheld. Fabrizio is porting Dan Boris' Virtual VCS emulator to the GP32 and has made excellent progress so far. The GP32 uses Smart Media Cards, allowing a great number of 2600 games to be loaded into the GP32 simultaneously. Fabrizio tells us that games are fully playable now, but presently without sound.
