After all these years, a first-person shooter is finally making its way to the Atari 8-bit line of computers. Fox from the Atari demo group Taquart is creating a 3D, Doom-like game titled Vector. The game is rendered in an 80 x 48 window, but no word yet on how fast it runs or when it'll be completed. This is the same group creating Senso 7800 DX, a homebrew game based on Simon (called Senso in Europe) for the Atari 7800. Please visit the Vector Home Page for more information and screenshots. You can discuss Vector with other AtariAge visitors in our Atari 8-bit message board here. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Only one more day remains for you to submit your entry to the Gunfight Label Contest! Over twenty entries have been submitted thus far, demonstrating an amazing amount of talent in those who have submitted entries! The contest ends at Midnight, November 28th, after which no further labels will be accepted. Gunfight's author, Manuel Polik, will choose a winning entry by the end of the week. The winner of this contest will receive the first copy of Gunfight produced by Hozer Video Games, to which the winning label will be attached. Please visit the Gunfight Label Contest page for more information about the contest, including details on what the label must include as well as where to send your submissions. Update 11/29/2001: The Gunfight Label Contest is now over! Many thanks to everyone who took the time to submit entries, amazingly we received 38 in total, from 24 different people! Now that the contest has ended, Gunfight's author, Manuel Polik, will have to make the torturous decision as to which label will be the winner. We expect a decision from him relatively quickly, and that news will be posted here on AtariAge! All the contest entries can be viewed at the bottom of the Gunfight Label Contest page. Homebrew fever has now spread to the Atari 7800, with a game titled Senso 7800 DX being developed by Heaven of the Atari Demo Group Taquart. Senso 7800 DX is a version of the Milton Bradley game Senso, sold in the US as Simon. Senso is a memory game, where you try to memorize sequences of colors played by the machine and then play them back in the correct order. Senso 7800 DX adds many additional features to the basic Senso game, such as music, two player combat / team modes, levels, playing against time, and more. You can view our Games in Development Senso 7800 DX entry and also visit the Senso 7800 DX Development Page for more information. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
We've just put the first large batch of new Atari 2600 manual scans online for your enjoyment. Over 120 Atari 2600 manuals have been added, representing several companies but mostly Atari and Starpath this time around. We now have manual scans of every Starpath game commercially released, as well as a good majority of the small, black manuals included with early Atari titles. Now that we've completed this first wave of 2600 manual scans, we'll be adding additional 2600 manuals as fast as we can scan them. When we've depleted our collections, then we'll start soliciting scans for manuals we don't personally own. Enjoy! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
We've begun adding international games to the 2600 section, with our initial effort including almost 500 new titles. We've broken down the games into not only PAL/NTSC/SECAM, but also by region which you can read about in our Region Key. Most new entries only include the title, company, video format, and region - more detailed information and pictures will be included as we receive submissions. You can also see some examples of some more complete entries such as Puzzy and Video Gems. If you use the search box or advanced search page, North American games are selected by default, although you can choose to display all regions or a particular region. We realize this is only the beginning, but we promise there are many additions to come. We will only be adding titles that we can verify visually with a scan or a picture, so please do not send us email or post a message asking us to add something unless you can provide a picture of some kind. This will allow us to keep the guide as accurate as possible. If you want to point out some games that should be added to the database or discuss existing titles, please visit our Rarity Guide Forum. If you've frequented AtariAge in the past, then you're probably familiar with the 2600 game Qb created by Andrew Davie. But did you know that Qb was based on a game written by Andrew for the Atari 800 back in 1984? Unfortunately, Qb could only be played via emulation for those of us using NTSC systems, since Qb was written for PAL. Until now. Dennis Debro, with Andrew Davie's blessing, has created a patch for Qb that allows the game to run on NTSC televisions (on a real Atari 8-bit computer). You can download Dennis' patch here. To discuss and learn more about the patch please visit our Atari 8-bit message board here. Enjoy! Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Lynx UK has posted an interview with Songbird Productions' Carl Forhan, taken on November 14th. Carl has created and published games for the Atari Lynx and Jaguar, helping to keep these systems fresh with new content. Here's a snippet from the interview: LynxUK: Continuing from the last question, which game that you've published or about to, have you worked the hardest on and believe it's the best game you've released? Carl: Remnant is the most impressive game I've done in terms of graphics and scaling and audio. The code is better organized, and the engine is fairly flexible. Ponx is probably the most enjoyable game I've done on the Lynx; there's something about a quick high-speed game that's a lot of fun, even after some years have passed. Digital Press has posted some screenshots of what they believe to be the unreleased Apollo game Pompeii. They state that the ROM will be posted soon, but that it has no sound and there is very little gameplay completed. Interestingly, an ex-Apollo employee posted on our message board that Pompeii was actually completed and was going to be ported to the Atari 800. Perhaps there is a more complete version out there somewhere? Update: Italian fan Cisano Carmelo sent us this scan of the proposed Pompeii box art. We don't know if a prototype was actually made or not. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
We've just learned about two new games in development for the Atari 2600, Euchre by Erik Eid (aka Nostalgic) and Laseresal 2600 by Andrew Wallace. Euchre is an adaptation of the card game of the same name that is popular in the midwestern and northeast United States. Laseresal is a game where two players sit on opposite sides of the screen (top and bottom), and the objective is to blast each other through a field of rocks and other debris. You can learn more about these games by visiting our Games in Development page, and specifically, the pages for Euchre and Laseresal 2600. Thanks to Glenn Saunders for bringing these games to our attention. You can discuss Euchre and Laseresal in our 2600 message board here. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...

With the surge lately of homebrew development for the 2600 and 5200, we decided it was time to create a Games in Development page. This page lists all the games that we know to be presently in development by various authors in the classic gaming community. Each game also gets its own page where we list out all the details we know about the game, including screenshots, a brief description of the game, and a link to the game's home page. At present we're only listing 2600 and 5200 titles, but we'll be adding Jaguar and Lynx soon (to our knowledge, there are no games being written for the 7800, but we'd love to be proven wrong!) If you're a developer working on a game that's not listed here, please contact us. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
The first round of September 11th Classic Gaming Relief Auctions is now over and has raised $1981.13! Many thanks to everyone who contributed items and those who bid on the auctions to make them a rousing success! We knew that classic gamers were a generous bunch, but we never expected the response we received. We've put up a second batch of auctions, this time featuring hardware, autographed books, magazines and a few games. You can see a listing on eBay of all the Auction for America items currently running. We'll have a third round of auctions next week including a few items that weren't quite ready to put up for this second round. Please visit our September 11th Clasic Gaming Relief Auction page for more information on the auctions currently running and those coming up for auction next week. Death Derby, a new 2600 game in development, is a port of the infamous 1976 Exidy coin-op game Death Race, a game which was inspired by the equally infamous Roger Corman film, Death Race 2000. Programmer Glenn Saunders has created a development site where you can track the progress of the game, and download the game as it evolves. The page also describes the process of conceptualizing and developing the game from the beginning to the present time. Glenn hopes to produce the game with a box, and perhaps even produce a special edition, but that remains to be seen at this point. He is also looking for copyright information concerning what happened to Exidy and who owns the rights to Death Race, so if you happen to know anything please contact Glenn. You can also make suggestions to Glenn or discuss the game with other enthusiasts in our 2600 Forum. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
Khryssun, author of the VCSS games Ewok Adventure and Yars Quest, is at work on a new game titled Catapult. It's a port of the Odyssey2 game Stone Slinger, "with a lot of improvements". The VCSS is an Atari 2600 simulation program that runs games in the spirit of the original VCS. You can read more about VCSS at Khryssun Domain. Discuss in our Forum with other visitors...
