 Chris Cavanaugh has posted an interview he secured with Dan Kitchen at this year's E3 Expo. In the interview Dan talks about the many titles he's worked on in the past (over 100!) and the many projects he's involved with today at Majesco Sales. Dan also mentions that he has at least two unreleased Atari 2600 prototypes he was working on at Activision, including a sequel to Keystone Kapers.

 Classic Gaming's Marty Goldberg has interviewed Leonard Herman, author of "Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames". The third edition is due out this month from Rolenta Press, and Mr. Herman discusses the updates in the new edition as well as the history of the book and the growth of the hobby.

 We've just added a new feature to AtariAge that we hope everyone enjoys. You can now view the complete contents of over 30 Atari 2600 catalogs that we've added to our online database. And on each game's profile page, you can see what catalogs that game has appeared in. At present we only have Atari 2600 catalogs scanned, but we'll be adding catalogs for additional systems in the near future, mas well as catalogs we're missing for the 2600.If you have catalogs we're missing and would like to scan them for us, please drop us a line!

 Good Deal Games has interviewed Chris Charla, former editor of NextGen Magazine and classic gaming enthusiast. Some of you may remember that Chris is working on a "2600 Programming for Dummies" book that he hopes to have ready in time for Classic Gaming Expo 2001. Chris discusses his goals for the book, his time at NextGen, and other projects that he's working on.

 CNN Asia has an article about Infogrames' mobile game future in Japan, China, and other Asian countries. The article points out that low-res, simple games are ideal for 9kbps transfer rates on current cell phones. Namco has had success recently with their release of Pac-Man for NTT DoCoMo's I-Mode Internet data service, and surely Infogrames has an eye on that with their upcoming release of six games.

 Otaku No Zoku is working on a 2600 emulator for GameBoy Advance. It's written in pure assembly and the author hopes to have it moving at 60fps when it's finished. This is the same guy who ported MAME to the XBox (among other things), and he hopes to be showing both at Classic Gaming Expo. Currently it's only running on the VGBA emulator and not actual hardware, but he hopes to solve that problem without too much trouble.

 We're sorry to report that Midway Games has decided to exit the arcade business. How does this make news for AtariAge? Well, back in 1986 Midway Games acquired Atari Games, which was the independent division of Atari that produced coin-op games. In 2000, Atari Games (based in Milpitas, California) was renamed to Midway Games West.
Midway made its decision based on the "ongoing declining demand in the coin-operated arcade video game market." They will now concentrate on producing games for home consoles, such as the Playstation 2 and XBox. Midway is laying off "fewer than 60 employees". It's unclear what will happen to Midway's Milpitas office. There's a small blurb about it here.

 We've just finished uploading another large batch of 2600, 5200, and 7800 scans courtesy of Matt Reichert, Mitch Orman, and John Talbot. In total there are nearly 50 new scans, filling large gaps in our collection of images (especially for the 5200 and 7800).  Infogrames has signed an exclusive deal with UK developer iFone to produce java based Atari games for cell phones. According to an MSNBC article, six games will be released this September, with another six in December. Games will be downloaded for approximately $0.35 each play, and must be deleted after playing due to memory limitations. In order to play these games, the cell phone must be able to run J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), a standard that is expected to boom in the future.

 We're proud to announce the results of the Star Wars Autographed Cartridge Contest! The winner of the contest is Russ Perry Jr. for submitting a wide variety of high-quality, unique images. Russ has been an avid Atari fan for many years, as evidenced by correspondence he made with Atari and Answer Software as far back as 1982. Russ also provided us with scans of t-shirts offered by the Atari Club as well as images of rare brochures and advertisements for products that never saw the light of day. We have created a page displaying all of his submissions below so you can view them. Congratulations, Russ!

 We've put loads of new scans online submitted by AtariAge fans. Matt Reichert (Tempest) sent us 2600 box scans of RoadRunner, Sears Capture, and Asterix as well as 2600 cartridge scans of Flag Capture (Picture), RealSports Soccer (Red), RealSports Tennis (Red), Jungle Hunt (Red), Battlezone (Red), Moon Patrol (Red), and Sears Race (Picture). In the 7800 department, Mitchell Orman sent us several box scans, including Basketbrawl, Double Dragon, Tank Command, Choplifter!, Crossbow , Fight Night, Ikari Warriors, and Impossible Mission. And finally, -^Cro§Bow^- provided us with a cartridge scan of the elusive 7800 game Basketbrawl.If you want to keep tabs on changes we make to AtariAge, check out the Change Log page, which is updated often to reflect changes to the site that don't always make it to the main page.

 Sorry for the panic that ensued when AtariAge.com suddenly disappeared off the web yesterday. We were just as surprised as everyone else! The site was disabled by our host provider as we exceeded our bandwidth allocation for the month of June. Our account is now upgraded, and even if we exceed our bandwidth in the future, the site will not be disabled. In the meantime, we're shopping around for another host provider that has more reasonable rates. Again, our apologies for the inconvenience.

 Jagfest 2001 will be held June 30th from 10:00am to 10:00pm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While the show will include all types of videogame items, the focus will be on the Jaguar. It will feature a museum, signed copies of Tempest 2000, prizes, gaming, trading, dealers, and more. Check the official Jafgest page for more info.

 MCV has another report about Infogrames changing their name to Atari to increase brand awareness. According to the article, the Atari name is said to be a favorite of Infogrames CEO Bruno Bonnel. While this bodes well for exposure of the Atari name, it remains to be seen if the quality will be there. We hope so. For those not familiar with Infogrames, you can check their games page for a listing of their upcoming titles. In other Infogrames news, an AP story reports that the company recently laid off 82 employees from Humongous Entertainment.
Update: Check out this Atari Times report for some more information about Infogrames/Atari plans for the future. It certainly looks like they have a good attitude at this point.

 Sylvia is a new Atari emulator intended to emulate multiple systems across multiple platforms. According to programmer Christian Fowler, "the main goal of this project is to build a multi Atari video games emulator for today's generation of video game consoles. The emulator should support the main series of Atari consoles from the 1980's, and even include Atari's handheld console from the early 90's, the Atari Lynx." The project is still in an Alpha stage meaning there is no downloadable version yet, but you can see some screenshots of Sylvia emulating the 7800 in DOS.

 Twin Galaxies has announced the winner of the 1st Annual Classic Video Game World Championship, held May 31st-June 3rd at the Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, NH. Dwayne Richard, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has been crowned the first World Champion on classic video games, holding the #1 score on five different classic arcade machines. Mike Stulir of Back In Time was also on hand for the event, and held the first "Back in Time Atari 2600 Championshiop" which was won by Adam Wood of Providence, Rhode Island.  Infogrames has signed a deal with mobile entertainment content company Springtoys to produce PalmOS games based on Atari and other Infogrames properties. Specifically mentioned are Asteroids and Centipede, and they are slated to be available in early Summer 2001. Read more in the official Press Release.

 The Epyx Shrine has added Summer Games to its catalog of revered titles. Screenshots are shows from nine different systems (including the Spectrum and Amstrad CPC), and there is also trivia and interviews. Summer Games was ported to the 2600 by Peter Engelbrite, Tod Frye & Steve Baker, and you can read a short interview with Peter 'Stone' Engelbrite.

We've added some new scans to the site over the last week. New cartridge labels include PAL red label Joust, Asteroids, and RealSports Volley Ball (sent in by John Talbot), and a slew of scans including Berenstain Bears, Wall Defender, Sears picture label Baseball, Fighter Pilot, and Malagai (sent in by Marc Oberhauser). Kenny Brooks sent in a scan of the hard to find Quadrun box, and Belgarath submitted a Memory Match box scan. Finally Programmer Brian Prescott sent us a scan of Crazy Valet, and also the box and manual for Fatal Run.

 The Atari Time Machine reports that reliable sources have told them that Infogrames will be changing their name to Atari for better name recognition. This change may come into effect by the end of Summer, and all existing products would be updated to reflect the Atari name as well. Thanks to the Atari History Site for passing along this news.
